If a document does not have an extension your computer will not know how to open it. Check to make sure the document you are trying to open has either - .doc - .xls - .pdf etc. and when you are saving a document make sure you leave the extension in the title.
If your document has an extension, but is opening in the wrong application:
-Click once on the document icon.
-Hold down the Command (Open Apple key) and the i key. This allows you to get "Information" on the document. In the next window click on the drop down arrow next to "Open with" if this is not already shown. Next click on the double arrows and choose the application this document should open with, then click on Change All.
If this is happening with documents you are downloading from email, you will first need to download the document. Find the document in your User's Download folder, then proceed with the above instructions.
